One of the four Grand Slam events conducted each year is the Australian Open. The event is conducted in January at Melbourne Park in Melbourne. It originated as the Australasian championships in 1905 and has conducted 109 editions in 116 years. Till 1987, like the norm, matches were held in grass courts. Hard courts were introduced in 1988.
Australian Open is the harbinger of the other slams and is known as 'the happy Slam'. The two world wars collapsed the happiness from 1916 to 1918 and from 1941 to 1945. Melbourne Park has been the venue for the Australian Open since 1988. Rod Laver, Margaret Court, Show Court 2 and Show Court 3 are the oldest arenas in the Park, Rod Laver Arena being the largest with a seating capacity of 14,820. The second-largest venue is the John Cain Arena, constructed in 2000 and has a retractable roof like Margaret court and Rod Laver. A new court, Show Court Arena is under construction and is expected to host the upcoming Australian Open.
Currently, the World No.1 Novak Djokovic is the defending champion in the men's division. Japanese NorthStar Naomi Osaka is the singles champion in the women's division. The Serbian also holds the record for the most titles won by men, with a whopping number of 9. Margaret Court, after whom the Show Court One was renamed to Margaret Court Arena in 2003, has won the women's singles 11 times. In men's doubles, Adrian Quist holds the record with 10 wins. Thelma Coyne Long has 12 wins to her name in the doubles’ category for women.
Points received for the players vary at the Australian Open. As of now, 2000 points are awarded each to the winners of each category. Male finalists receive 1200 points and females receive 1300 points irrespective of the category. The points decrease exponentially for each knockout round down from the finals.
